POLICE arrested eleven people on Tuesday whom they suspect to be the “masterminds” of a string of armed robberies in the capital.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Stephen Dean, the thefts all took place in New Providence over the past few days and involved victims being held up and robbed of their vehicles.

One of these robberies occurred shortly after 11am on Tuesday, when three men in a black Honda CRV robbed a woman walking on Wilton Street of her handbag and a cell phone.

A short while later, three men armed with handguns robbed the operator and a patron of a business on Charles W Saunders Highway of an undetermined amount of cash and a cell phone before speeding off in a black Honda CRV.

An intense investigation was launched into these two incidents that resulted in officers from the Selective Enforcement Unit arresting the three men at a home in Pinewood Gardens.

Police also recovered a cell phone and cash taken during the two armed robberies.

Six men and two women were also arrested at this home for questioning in reference to a number of serious offences.

Police also recovered the black Honda CRV the suspects used in the two armed robberies and discovered that the car was stolen from a woman during an armed robbery on December 10.

Police credit the success of this major breakthrough to excellent teamwork, precise execution of the RBPF Policing Plan and support from members of the public.

Officers from the Selective Enforcement Team also arrested two men in two separate incidents after they were found in possession of suspected marijuana and cocaine.

In the first incident, shortly after noon on Tuesday, officers went to a home located in Pinewood Gardens, where they arrested an adult male after they found a quantity of marijuana in his possession.

In the second incident, shortly before 6pm, officers arrested an adult male in Golden Palm Estates after they found a quantity of cocaine in his possession.

Investigations continue.
