Flights to Cuba

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Has anyone else taken note of the agreement that was signed between Cuba and the US Government on December 16th that will allow as many as 110 scheduled flights daily between those countries?

Bahamasair, already a half a billion dollar albatross around the neck of Bahamians, is now set to probably lose their share of that market which can only compound their 8.5 million losses for the current fiscal year. And let us not forget the further 3.5 million loss for damages caused by their maintenance issues. Despite their losses, our government is still subsidising Bahamasair to the tune of nearly 15 million a year; perhaps it is time to seriously look at privatising the albatross.

Further, the implications this agreement has for our US tourism product is sobering if not downright frightening.

Could this development, in part, be the result of our government putting all of our eggs in the Chinese basket?

One has to wonder.
