A MAN was remanded to prison yesterday after being charged in connection with a recent murder.

Ryan Wood Jr, 21, of Toote Shop Corner, appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt accused of intentionally causing the death of Rafik Turnquest on December 19.

According to reports, around 9pm on the date in question, Turnquest was standing outside a home on John Chipman Street when a man, armed with a handgun, approached and shot him before fleeing the scene on foot.

Turnquest died in hospital the same night.

Wood has been charged with murder under Section 291 (1)(B) of the Penal Code.

A charge under this section does not attract the discretionary death penalty if a conviction is reached at the end of trial.

He was not allowed to enter a plea to the charge due to the nature of the offence.

The case is to be forwarded to the Supreme Court through the presentation of a voluntary bill of indictment on February 18, 2016.

Wood was remanded to the Department of Correctional Services, but he has the right to apply to the Supreme Court for bail.

Lawyer Tonique Lewis represents him.
