A smokey forecast

EDITOR, The Tribune.

When a Florida weather report can describe the weather in Nassau as “smokey” as it did last week, this should raise alarm bells for the government that something has to be done about the dump on Harrold Road.

Fires have plagued this facility for years, and during the past week residents have been complaining about sore throats, sinusitis attacks, headaches and weeping eyes among other ailments.

Although the cause of the last fire has been blamed on arson, people in the know have stated that because we have a dump and not a proper land fill there will be a constant problem of spontaneous combustion causing general discomfort to residents.

Undoubtedly guests at the Baha Mar properties would have suffered some of the distress as well, and, if the government and the investors want  this property to succeed they had better move quickly to try and establish a proper landfill in another area.

Does the government have an Air Quality Department? The operator should be fined 10 grand a day for allowing this to continue and pollute the air and causing health issues for the public not to mention the smoke damage to a persons personal possessions in their home. Maybe they would take this issue a little more seriously if the government got into their pocket.

Central Bank did not have authority to fine BOB 10g a day for not filing proper reports, so I'm sure there is no air quality person with any more authority than the authority to request no onions on her whopper at Burger King.
