Saida Karamo reads her winning essay at last year’s “Join Me on the Bridge” event.

“JOIN Me on the Bridge”, an annual celebration held on International Women’s Day, has launched its essay and art competition and is asking both male and female students from Grand Bahama to concentrate on women who inspire others.

Launched in 2010 as part of an international grassroots campaign, “Join Me on the Bridge, Grand Bahama” continues to grow, and encourages a joining on a bridge (real or symbolic) to stand in solidarity with women, men and children locally, and around the world, who are celebrating the achievements of women and focusing on issues women still face.

The topic of the essay contest is, “What woman has inspired you and why?” The winning two essays, one from a female and one from male student, will be judged on relevance to theme, originality, clarity of thought, organisation, grammar and spelling.

The art competition is being held under the theme of “Inspiring Women”. The art pieces will be judged based on relevance to theme, technique, organisation, creativity, and individuality.

The four winners – two girls and two boys – will receive $100. The deadline for entries is no later than February 27 at 4pm. Essays must be sent as an attachment to an e-mail to FreeportBridge@gmail.com. Only essays sent by email will be considered. The original art piece must be physically delivered to The Garden of the Groves.

Both competitions are open to students from grades 10-13 attending high school in Grand Bahama.
