Giants take game one over Comets

THE St John’s Giants took the upper hand in their Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools’ best-of-three senior boys championship series against the Queen’s College Comets.

The Giants pulled off a 69-67 victory over the Comets at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium last night. Game two of the series is scheduled to be played Wednesday. If necessary, the third and deciding game is set for Wednesday.

It came down to the free throw line with Raheem Nixon sealing the deal on his only point for the final score after Darius Major had given St John’s a 68-67 lead.

Before St John’s won it, Queen’s College got a free throw from Kafiannan King and another from Bhylan Culmer to tie the score at 67-67.

St John’s had to hold off a fourth quarter spurt by Queen’s College as they went on a 21-12 rout to come from a 57-46 deficit at the end of the third, thanks to nine from King and seven from Culmer.

Major finished with all five of his points in the fourth for the Giants, who also got 22 points from Brian Cleare, 19 from Dwight Wheatley and nine from Ayinee Maynard.

King scored a game high 23 points, Culmer had 14 and Kevin Miller 13 in a losing effort for the Comets. Queen’s College opened a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and pushed their advantage to 37-29 at the half.
