Kingsway Academy Saints junior girls’ basketball team has been dominant throughout the BAISS season, and that trend continued on their way to the championship title.

The Saints closed out the Queen’s College Comets 51-27 yesterday at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium to sweep the best-of-three series.

The Saints got a game high 25 points from Valicia Demeritte, Tarae Bowleg added 14 while Alana Pinder finished with 12. Tyler Lightbourne led the Comets with seven points.

Saints head coach Anthony Pinder said he knew his team had the opportunity to be special. “You could see from their practices that these girls had a particular skill set that could lead to them having a very successful season,” he said. “It was simply a matter of them putting that together to translate onto the court and the end result was a championship title.”

After a blowout loss in game one, the Comets looked determined to hang with the high-powered Saints’ offence in game two. They trailed 8-2 at the end of the first quarter and withstood a late rally from the Saints, but Kingsway held a slim 18-12 lead into the half.

Bowleg said the Comets presented no challenge to the Saints and she sparked the second half rally that put the game away with a jumper to open the third.

Kingsway outscored QC 24-2 in the quarter to take a commanding 42-14 lead into the fourth.

After slow scoring to open up the third, the Saints reeled off a 9-0 run on a three-pointer by Bowleg and three consecutive steals and layups from Pinder.

The Comets’ ball handlers struggled to get beyond half court and steal after steal saw the Saints turn defence into easy offence.

The Saints were one of only two BAISS basketball teams to go undefeated in the 2014-15 season.
