A flying start

The CV Bethel Stingrays are on a fast track to repeat as champions following day one of the 22nd Annual Government Secondary School Sports Association Senior Track & Field Championships.

Through 66 events on day one, the Stingrays totalled 371.50 points, 102.50 points ahead of their nearest competitor, the CR Walker Knights.

The Knights stand in second place with 269 points, followed by the CC Sweeting Cobras in third with 210.50 points. The CI Gibson Rattlers are fourth with 175 points, Doris Johnson Mystic Marlins are fifth with 164 points, RM Bailey Pacers seventh with 118 points, Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves seventh with 104 points and the Government High School Magic round out the eight-team field with 55 points.

Nine records fell on day one of the meet. Five of them were broken in the intermediate girls’ division.

The Knights’ Gayneil Sands set a new mark in the 100m in 12.26s, followed by teammate Caroline Johnson in 12.77s and the Stingrays Proline Pierre in 12.86s.

In the 400m, CV Bethel’s Jodie Miller lowered the mark to 1:01.37s while her teammate Romica Josey was second in 1:03.38s and Edwinette Sturrup of CR Walker was third in 1:06.25s.

In the 1,500m, the Stingrays’ Carvator Pratt dominated the field to finish first with a new mark of 5:32.15s, followed by teammate Kenyain McKenzie in 6:07.36s and Vernecia Hudson of CR Walker in 6:23.52s.

The Stingrays 4x100m relay team lowered last year’s mark by nearly two seconds with their time of 50.55s.

Aaliyah Cooper was the division’s record breaker in the field with a leap of 1.42m.

In the intermediate boys, CC Sweeting’s Adrian Thompson set a new record in the 1,500m with his a time of 4:29.32s.

Cadeau Augustin of RM Bailey was third in 4:34.32s and Joseph Nixon of CC Sweeting third in 4:35.54s.

In the senior boys’ pole vault, Ramell Poitier of CV Bethel set a new mark of 2.99m while Bradley Cooper of CR Walker threw 14.46m to set a new mark in the shot put.

Despite the Stingrays’ massive lead, CC Sweeting’s Denvaughn Whyms was undoubtedly the star of day one with three individual gold medals to his credit in the intermediate boys’ division.

In the 100m, 15-year-old Whyms ran to first place in 11.15s followed by the Stingrays’ Javaughn Culmer in 11.35s and Perez Knowles of the Mystic Marlins in 11.41s.

In the 110m hurdles, his time of 14.71s blew away the field as second place finisher Rashad Rolle of the Stingrays finished in 16.29s and Stephon Johnson of CI Gibson was third in 17.07.

In the long jump, he finished first again with a wind-aided leap of 6.54m, followed by Gerino Rolle of the Rattlers at 6.29m and Dovvankiylin Rolle of the Stingrays at 6.06m.

The Cobras’ Ken Mullings also delivered outstanding individual performances on day one in the senior boys’ division, with a first place finish in his signature event - the high jump - at the 1.93 mark. He also ran to a second place finish in the 100m in 11.46s, behind Cameron Oliver of CV Bethel, who finished in 10.97s.

Starting at 9am in the original Thomas A Robinson Stadium, the meet concludes today highlighted by the 200m and 4x400m relays.
