OFFICIALS from the Bahamas Red Cross Society have announced that on March 28 the organisation will transform the Lower Grounds of Government House into a “fun-filled” environment for the 74th annual Red Cross Fair.

Under the theme “Bahamas Red Cross Fair - 74 years, Celebrating Family Fun,” the society hopes that the fair acts as a major fundraiser to aid with growing financial demands.

Red Cross Director General Carolyn Turnquest explained during a press conference held at the society’s headquarters on JFK Drive yesterday that due to the country’s economic woes, the charity-based organisation needs all the help it can get.

“As a result of the nation’s economic climate there has been an increase in the number of persons seeking assistance. Beyond that fact, our general expenses as an organisation have escalated due to the increase in the number of persons we cater to daily,” said Mrs Turnquest.

“As an organisation, our overhead expenses have increased over the years. Here at the Red Cross we had to buckle down and make some moves to save money. So events like our annual fair are huge for us. We need these events to raise as much money as we possibly can,” she added.

According to the Fair Committee’s chairperson, Jerry Smith, the fair annually raises between $70,000 and $80,000. He indicated the event has been one of the major fundraisers of the Bahamas Red Cross.

Red Cross programmes like Meals on Wheels, School Milk Scheme, First Aid Services, Disaster and Emergency Relief Assistance, Family Island Services, Red Cross Youth After School Mentoring Programme and many more all depend on the funds generated by the annual fair.

Mr Smith said: “Through the tireless assistance of our staff and numerous volunteers we are able to provide unselfish services to our brothers and sisters throughout The Bahamas.”

This year, the fair will feature some 70 stalls, including straw work crafted by local artisans, hoop-la, punchboard and plants. Also, local performer Funky D is scheduled to make an appearance.

“Each year, the fair caters to thousands of individuals who pass through the gates to enjoy themselves in wholesome family activities of games, delicious foods and rides,” said Mr Smith.

The fair will begin at noon on March 28 at the Lower Grounds of Government House.
