An odd start on the track, field

Sarah Hepburn, Megan Moss, Doneisha Anderson, Charisma Taylor, Alexis Gray and Otto Laing were double winners of events as the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations kicked off its 2015 season with the Odd Distance Track Classic at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium on Saturday.

Hepburn highlighted the girls’ under-10 division by taking the 80 metres in 11.22 seconds. The eight-year-old Fast Forward team member also took the tape in the 150m in 21.12. Moss, a 13-year-old from Club Monica, posted her victories in the under-24 girls’ 150m in 19.63 and the 300m in 43.03.

Taylor, a 16-year-old member of Club Monica, won the under-18 girls 300m in 40.53 and the 60m hurdles in 8.60. She was also second in the 150m in 18.63 that was won by 16-year-old Blayre Catalyn, competing unattached, in 18.41.

Anderson, a 15-year-old from Tonique Williams Track Club, was the winner of the under-16 girls 150m in 18.10 and the 300m in 39.22 and Grey, an 18-year-old, joined her team-mate in capturing the open women’s 150m in 18.53 and the 300m in 40.38.

On the opposite side of the coin, Laing was the only male double winner. The 11-year-old High Performance Track Club’s member claimed first place in the under-12 boys 80m in 10.91 and the 150m in 20.10.

The meet, which was designed for competitors to run shorter distances on the track and use shorter approaches or stand up throws on the field, also saw some outstanding individual performances from a number of other athletes.

Among the list on the girls’ side were Jaidyn Russell of Fast Forward in the under-8 60m in 11.00; Lydia Clarke from Dtsp Wolfpack in the under-12 80m in 10.88; High Performance’s Danielle Saunders in the under-12 150 in 20.88; Anthaya Charlton of the Star Trackers in the under-14 80m in 10.41; Dreshanae Rolle, a 17-year-old Unattached Clark competitor in the under-18 girls 600m in 1:38.70; Itsa Smith, 30, of Unattached Clark, won the open 600m in 1:41.12 and Amber Ford, 18, of Tonique Williams Track Club who was second in the 600m in 1:41.92, won the 1,000m in 3:08.03 over Smith’s second place in 3:12.53.

On the field, Amina Forbes, 14, of Leap of Faith in the under-16 high jump with 1.37m; Taj Dorsette, 17, of Star Tracker took the under-28 long jump with 5.02m; Tiffany Hanna, 26, of Club Monica, won the open shot put with a heave of 10.91m; Ashley Oembler, 21, of the College of the Bahamas, won the open discus with 38.06m and Vanessa Beneby, 18, of the College of the Bahamas, won the open high jump with 1.66m.

Kion Burrows, 7, of Ambassador Athletics, won the under-8 boys 60m in 10.50; Philip Gray Jr, 9 of Dtsp Wolfpack, took the under-10 80m in 12.00; Tadan Ferguson, 8, of Fast Forward, won the under-10 150m in 23.10; Conrad Newry, 13 of Star Trackers, won the under-14 80m in 9.41; Nathan Moss, 12 of Fast Forward, won the under-14 150m in 17.75 and Ethan Hanna, 13 of the Ambassadors Athletics won the under-14 boys 300m in 40.19.

Also, Godfrey Arthur, a 15-year-old from High Performance clinched the under-16 150m in 16.97; Denvaughn Whymms, a 15-year-old from Club Monica won the under-16 300m in 36.94; Alfred Strachan, 17 of High Performance won the under-18 150m in 16.298; Kaze Poitier, 15 of Fast Forward took the under-18 300m in 35.88; Glen Knowles, 16 of Club Monica, won the under-28 600m in 1:30.00 and Tavonte Mott, 17 of Star Trackers, won the under-18 60m hurdles in 7.73.

The open division saw Vano Stubbs, 25 of Silver KLightning, take the 150m in 16.22; Stephen Newbold, 21 of the Star Trackers, clocked 33.56 for the win in the 300m; Rocky Jane-Louis, all the way from Moores Island, Abaco, claimed the 600m in 1:21.00; the 1,000m went to Devonte Newbold, 13, of Fast Forward in 2:05.10 and Xavier Coakley, 19, of Leap of Faith, snatched the 60m hurdles in 7.69.

On the field, Branson Rolle, 16 of High Performance, won the under-18 long jump with 6.02m; Keap of Faith’s 19-year-old Laquan Nairn took the open men’s high jump with 2.05m; Leonardo Romer, 21, of the College of the Bahamas, won the triple jump with 15.36m after he was third in the high jump with 1.82m behind Nairn and Ken Mullings, 17 of Leap of Faith, with 1.94m.

And to round out the performances, Gerrard Burrows, 21, of Throwers Inc., won the open men’s shot put with a heave of 14.07m, but he had to settle for second in the discus with 38.29m. Drexel Maycock, 19 competing unattached, won the discus with 44.24m and was second in the shot put with 13.54m. Denzel Pratt, 19 of Club Monica, won the javelin with 59.10m.
