Former co-chairman of the Grand Bahama Port Authority Sir Jack Hayward has died aged 91.
The businessman was born in the United Kingdom, but had been based in the Bahamas since the fifties and was a major figure in Freeport.
He died in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday morning.

At the moment that "enclave" is a cash cow for the Public Treasury. Get rid of the enclave and you cause the Treasury to lose revenue and have a greater need to increase VAT.
The enclave pays for itself, it gets no free ride. The enclave pays for the maintenance of the roads, the airport, the harbor, its garbage collection and more. Its Customs Duties, Car Licenses fees, departure taxes etc. all go to the Public Treasury, none of it is used on the roads, garbage, airport or harbor.
You don't want to get rid of the enclave unless you want more taxes or a downgrade of The Bahamas international financial rating.

Any one who has a car has to license it whether they make money or not. 30,000+ vehicles (say $170.00 each) and the $1.20 of tax on each gallon of fuel (say 10 gal a week or $625.00 a year). That's over $24,000,000 for no outlay. Then you have the airport and harbor departure tax millions that are spent on all the other airports and harbor, except the ones in Freeport (Port Area). And that is just the beginning, add Customs Duties, Stamp Duties and so on. Residents pay for their garbage to be collected, not so in the rest of the country. The "Port Area" is a major plus for the country.
The real potential of Freeport has yet to be realized. There is so much that we can do, duppyVAT, to make this a better country for us and our children.

I hope he made it into Heaven. Freeport is definitely a cash cow for the government. If the entire Bahamas was structured like Freeport, the government would have very little responsibility and a whole lot of money coming in.
