Fiery protest over land law

LOCAL civil justice advocate Randy Rolle yesterday condemned and burned in protest a copy of the Quieting Titles Act in Rawson Square and urged the enactment of a Freedom of Information Act to ensure that the rights of Bahamians are protected.

Mr Rolle, who said he is also known as “Economic Justice and Equality for Bahamian People”, demanded the government repeal the Act because its wording allows “fraudulent land thieves” to take advantage of “poor, everyday Bahamians”.

Mr Rolle said: “Patriots of Majority Rule, such as Sir Milo Butler are rolling over in their graves to see what has become of us.”

The Quieting Titles Act allows for any person that has claim to a plot of land to go before the court and petition the court to grant them a certificate of title for that plot of land.

Once that petition is made, the court then has to make it public knowledge that the person filing the claim is attempting to obtain the title, allowing any other person with claim the chance to come before the courts and show legal ownership of the land.

Mr Rolle claimed that this is where the confusion exists. He suggested that due to high legal costs, most Bahamians are unable to afford legal representation to protect their land inheritance.

“The sad part is that poor Bahamians can’t begin to afford the $500 an hour the lawyers charge to represent them, even if the lawyers fees are as low as $30 an hour, most of these unfortunate poor Bahamians can’t afford it, considering the years it takes to adjudicate quieting petitions.”

He added: “In many cases, lawyers and politicians use the Quieting Titles Act to deprive poor Bahamians of their entitlement to acres of land their fathers, grandfathers, etc., secured for their children and great-grandchildren.”

“This is why I’m burning a copy of the Quieting Titles Act - in protest and condemnation of this Act that provides an avenue for diabolic, unscrupulous land thieves, who enrich themselves by being awarded a certificate of title by courts, and then selling to rich investors for millions, while poor Bahamians stand aside, look, cry and die from anger and grief.”

He called on concerned citizens to unite and march to Rawson Square while the House of Assembly is meeting to demand “our land and country back”, call for a new election, the enactment of the Freedom of Information Act and the abolishment of the Quieting Titles Act.

Good job Mr. Randy Rolle for doing what is obviously the right thing regarding the Quieting Titles Act!

It is a license for the haves to steal from the have not's .....Pure and simple!

Everywhere else on this planet abolished the Quieting Titles Act long ago.

Bahamas is the last country in this solar system that allow a Quieting Titles Act to exist.

Until WE THE PEOPLE STAND UP and demand it be abolished and an FOIA be established, nothing will change & the powers that be will continue raping Bahamians without so much as sweet lies, a kiss or KY jelly!

Americans, Haitians, Canadians, Japanese, Chinese and everyone else are bringing change to their corrupt governmental systems by demonstrating and demanding change.

Bahamians need to do the the same.....Where do I/we sign up?

This quieting title business is so very wrong. and the law should be changed. Only poor people suffer from this injustice.

I'm with you sir, there are too many of us living poor today because of the greed not only of other Bahamians but in some cases our own family members.

This law clearly makes it easier for anyone to jump up out the blue and stake claim to land they know nothing about.

It is clearly geared towards those who already have plenty to get even more, even if it means taking something that they know they have no rights to.
