The BAMSI blaze in January 2015.

A DORMITORY at the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute in Andros was severely damaged by fire yesterday.

Fire Chief Walter Evans led a team from Nassau to the island last night to investigate the blaze that started sometime after 6pm at a male dormitory.

Last night, Mr Evans confirmed that officers and volunteers were still working to out the blaze at 11pm.

Mr Evans said that the scale of the fire had been significantly reduced when he arrived on the island, adding that his team had begun investigations.

Meanwhile in Nassau, fire services also responded to a fire at a two storey building at Wulff Road and Market Street. Further details could not be obtained up to press time.

Courses at BAMSI began this week, according to an administrative clerk yesterday, who confirmed that the school had enrolled an additional 10 students in the new term.

Forty-five students from nine different islands registered for BAMSI’s agriculture and marine science associate degree programmes last year.

Construction setbacks led to a soft launch of the institute in September, with faculty and students using the Landing Restaurant and Lounge at Western Air’s San Andros airport terminal as a lecture hall. There were also makeshift accommodations for housing and classrooms.

At that time, Agriculture Minister V Alfred Gray estimated that total costs of the makeshift accommodations for housing and classrooms are around $120,000 and would be used for the institute’s inaugural term.

He projected that construction would be completed in time for the school’s new term in January.

Due to lack of on time payments the PLP at the time had a contract to do road works with a company called associated asphalt...they got AA so backed up in payments they owed to suppliers they had to declare bankruptcy and pull out of the Bahamas. FNM for better or worse revisited the project and got it done with the previous crew. The government, BOTH OF THEM, are notorious for not paying bills and put companies working on tight margins in very very difficult situations... I am willing to bet they have not paid their insurance bill yet.

So, $120,000, burn up $20,000 worth of materials, wonder who got the $100,000 balance? Same ratio on the $50 mil, inflated by cost overruns to $150 Mil, Gonna be a bigger fire shortly!

Public Accounts Committee needs to complete an assessment on the other buildings to ensure the materials used are worth the stated price and that the output is worth the manpower expensed to date. This whole project stinks to high heaven. How can you allot 23 million to two paltry buildings and not have enough to pay workers? That simply does not make sense. It would have to mean that 19 million went straight to the extortion account

Someone is getting very rich off of this project. Why do Bahamians put up with the outright theft of the peoples money? This project could help our country but because of our lying, stinking, corrupt, shithead, politicians and our warranted, deep distrust of them it is mired in controversy. I submit that our politicians are our BIGGEST problem in this country! Do away with the traitors, all of them, and we might stand a chance.

Wholeheartedly agree with you. One they're stealing straight from the treasury giving contracts to themselves and two because they are corrupt they see nothing with corruption in the country in general because everybody just trying to get ahead, "why does it matter how you made your money" according to George Smith, people who made their money illegally should be allowed to invest it according to another senior government official. Wayne Rolle says it's a waste of time to investigate the bribeS at BEC, I say it's exactly what we should be spending our money on uncovering unethical and illegal practices among senior government officials, who cares what political party they're in.

............................... Best Comment So Far For 2015 ! .........................

We should all be about exposing and ridding our country of the pirates that hold our country and people hostage.

PLP, FNM, clergy and any combination thereof. Piracy and corruption must go!
