BOC CONGRATSS

TUREANO JOHNSON

THE Bahamas Olympic Committee extended its congratulations to Tureano ‘Reno’ Johnson for his success in Madison Square Gardens, New York, last week Friday.

The BOC gave a great bravo and hooray to this outstanding Bahamian athlete for demonstrating to the world that excellence and talent knows no national boundaries. In adding the WBA and WBC belts to his Continental Americas belt, Johnson becomes even more of an inspiration and a positive role model to thousands of Bahamian youngsters searching for their inner champion. We salute his efforts and wish him all the best in his future life and sporting endeavors.

THE Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools continued its regular season Wednesday with the Queen’s College Comets winning another senior boys game.Jonathan Walkine and Elliot Greenslade both scored 12 points as the Comets won 56-39 over the Jordan Prince Williams Falcons.

DONATION

BAHAMIAN Daun Ferguson, owner of Salons in Miami and founder of www.dauncosmetics.com, has made a major contribution to the Hugh Campbell tournament, supplying all Gatorade and Gatorade equipment for every day and every game.

Ferguson is also paying for the appearance of former NBA player Wali Jones to visit the Hugh Campbell as a host camp speaker. Her donation totalling over $10,000 is her efforts to enhance sports and youths in Bahamas. Her makeup line is one that will be unveiled in the Bahamas at the Atlantis resort on Paradise island 3pm February 22.

NPBA ACTION

THE Island Luck Pros and PJ Stingers won the New Providence Basketball Association’s double header as the NPBA continued its regular season at the AF Adderley Gymnasium on Wednesday night. While the Pros held off the Pyramid Food Rockets 78-75. Livingstone Munnings had a big night, exploding for a game high 23 points and 26 rebounds to lead Island Luck to victory.

The Stingers outlasted the Rhythm Rebels 97-79.  

RUGBY

HEINEKEN CUP

THE Bahamas Rugby Union is scheduled to be in action with its Heineken Cup 3pm Saturday at the Winton Rugby Centre when the Buccaneers face the Cuckoos, who are coming off their victory as the champions of the Nassau Cup with a perfect 4-0 record.

RUGBY TEAM

THE Nassau contingent of the Bahamas’ national rugby team is now training at the Winton Rugby Centre every Tuesday at 6:30pm under head coach Manoli Roussos and manager John Gates. At the moment, the invitation to train is extended to every eligible player in Nassau. In order to be eligible, a player has to either be a citizen, a Bahamian parent or have resided in Nassau for three years.

BOWLING

THE top scorer and most valuable player in Financial Bowling League competition last night was Mark Munnings of Deloitte & Touche with a 539 three game set. Bud Cambridge of Forsythe Communications followed with a respectable 535 second high set. The high game was a 214 from Philip Davis Jr of Moonlight Strikers with Chavez Thompson of the Fidelity Bulldogs dropping the pins for a 213 second high game.

Ladies MVP of the evening was Uchena Delva of Sunshine Insurance, who toppled the pins for a 505 high three game set. Delva was followed by Tara Culmer of Forsythe Communications with a 208 high game and a 504 second high set. Monique Miller of Strike Force downed the pins for the second high game of 195.

In other scores of the evening, Fidelity Bulldogs blanked Price Waterhouse Coopers 3-0, Deloitte & Touche nipped Leno Corporate Services 2-1, Strike Force edged Rubis Oil Stars 2-1, BTC Night Hawks held off Forsythe Communications and Moonlight Strikers outlasted Sunshine Insurance 2-1.

PURE SILK GOLF

OFFICIALS of the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic, scheduled for February 2-8 at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island, are accepting volunteers for the tournament to fill vacancies in different areas.

Volunteers who work for the tournament will receive an official Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic logo shirt and cap, free breakfast and lunch on assigned workdays, a tournament badge, free parking, and an invitation to the volunteer celebration party. There is no fee to volunteer.
