MASTERS SOFTBALL

LEAGUE

THE Masters Softball League is scheduled to hold a meeting for all teams, managers and players 6:30pm Tuesday in the Archdeacon William Thompson Softball Park at the Southern Recreation Grounds.

The meeting is to finalise all team rosters in preparation for the start of the season, tentatively set for this weekend at the park. 

CAT ISLAND REGATTA

THE Cat Island Sailing Club Association is slated to launch its second ‘Promote Cat Island Regatta Month’ during the month of February.

“Our first ‘Promote Cat Island Regatta Month’ was very successful. We visited a number of radio and TV stations where we raised the level of visibility of our club,” said club president Pat Strachan.  

“We believe that the public is our number one priority and we will communicate with them effectively. During the past 12 months, we’ve made major strides and we believe it’s important that we communicate that to the public.”

This year the club will celebrate the 59th annual regatta. The event will take place in New Bight July 31 to August 3. 

“I’m proud to announce this year we will be honouring the late Herbert King. He was one of the most outstanding sailors from Cat Island,” Strachan said. 

The ‘Promote Cat Island Regatta Month’ is used to promote the club’s fund-raising events, the history of sailing, the club’s accomplishments and the vision of the president.

CHAMPION AMATEUR

BOXING

CHAMPION Amateur Boxing Club is all set to hold its first show for 2015 6pm Saturday (January 31) at the Wulff Road Boxing Square.Dubbed “Moving Forward,” the show will feature 2020 Olympic hopeful Lennox Boyce as well as a marquee match-up between Don Rolle and Lorenzo Fertil.

Another match-up on the card will be between Keiran Sweeting and Tavaz Kemp. Five other matches will be contested. All amateur boxers and clubs are invited to compete.

Awards will be presented to the most improved boxer, most outstanding boxer and the best fight of the night.

Ray Minus Jr, the club founder and head coach, also sent out a “shout-out” and congratulations to former amateur boxer Tureano ‘Reno’ Johnson on winning the WBC Silver and WBA International middleweight titles.

PURE SILK GOLF

OFFICIALS of the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic, scheduled for February 2-8 at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island, are accepting volunteers for the tournament to fill vacancies in different areas.

Volunteers who work for the tournament will receive an official Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic logo shirt and cap, free breakfast and lunch on assigned workdays, a tournament badge, free parking, and an invitation to the volunteer celebration party. There is no fee to volunteer. “It is a huge undertaking and we are looking to make the final push to fill out our volunteer committees.  Local support has been phenomenal, and come tournament week, we’ll have over 400 volunteers helping us make the 2015 Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic the best yet. Our success in the community allows us to shine in hosting the best women golfers in the world in the true welcoming fashion of the Bahamas,” said Matt Truax, tournament director.

In addition, the tournament now is accepting applications for media credentials. Media organisations can log onto lpgamediacredentials.com to make requests. A completed application is not a guarantee of credential approval.

This year’s Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic is the second on the LPGA’s 2015 schedule. Among the top golfers expected to compete in the $1.3 million tournament is defending champion Jessica Korda. The official name of the tournament is the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic.

BSC ROAD RACE

THE Baptist Sports Council has announced that its 2015 Family Fun Run/Walk Race is set for Saturday, January 31, starting and finishing at the William Thompson Auditorium, Jean Street. 

The runners will leave Jean Street and travel south to Prince Charles Drive, east to Fox Hill Road, north to Bernard Road, west to Hillside Road and south to the finish line. 

The walkers will leave Jean Street and travel north to Bernard Road, west to Soldier Road, south to Prince Charles, east to Jean Street and north back to the finish line.  The categories include 15-and-under, 20-and-under, 30-and-under, 40-and-under, 50-and-under and over-50. There will also be a pastors and ministers category. The entry fee is $10 per person. 

Trophies will be presented to the top three finishers in each category and t-shirts will also be distributed. Registration forms are available by contacting Brent Stubbs at 502-2363 or email stubbobs@gmail.com

CAFL ELECTIONS

MEL Ferguson, commissioner of the Commonwealth American Football League, has announced that based on added interest of individuals wanting to run for the office of president of the league, the executive committee has agreed to reschedule the election date to February 12-13.

The CAFL is again extending an invitation to individuals wanting to run for the office of president of the CAFL. All nominations must be submitted to the election judge, Marty Knowles, no later than Friday, January 30.
