THE Grand Bahama Utility Company Limited has denied that its waste water treatment plant in Chesapeake is a threat to human health or the environment.

The company was responding to claims made by Chesapeake resident Shuffle Hepburn, who claims that the plant is a “health threat” to the environment and the nearby area.

Mr Hepburn claims that he and other homeowners in Chesapeake on Midshipman Drive are often awakened by a foul odour in the area. It has been an issue for the past seven years, he said, and he believes that the plant may be responsible.

Geron Turnquest, manager of GBUC Ltd, issued a statement on Friday concerning claims made by Mr Hepburn.

Mr Turnquest refuted Mr Hepburn’s claims and said his company wanted to assure the public that its waste water treatment plant “operates in accordance with industry standards and does not pose any threat to human health or the environment”.

“It is of utmost importance to the Utility Company to operate the plant in a manner that utilises the best management practices available for the industry like any other waste water treatment plants in the Bahamas,” he said.

Mr Turnquest indicated that the plant is available to be toured and interests or requests should be made directly to the Utility Company at 350-9222 or 350-9206.
