A ten-year-old boy is recovering in hospital today after being hit by a bus, driven by a government employee, yesterday morning.

According to Assistant Superintendent Craig Stubbs, officer-in-charge of the Police Traffic Department, the Stephen Dillet Primary School student was attempting to cross East Street when he was hit by a bus, driven by a Department of Customs officer.

“Shortly after 8am, we received word that there was an accident on East Street, near Toote Shop Corner, involving a bus belonging to Bahamas Customs and a child pedestrian,” he said.

“According to our information, the driver was travelling south on East Street when the 10-year-old student ran from the eastern portion of the road to the western side. The driver of the bus made attempts to avoid the collision with the child but still hit the child. The boy received a laceration the head, injuries to his face and upper body and had a tooth hit out. He was rushed to hospital where he is listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.”

Assistant Supt Stubbs said the bus received extensive damage from the impact of the collision. The driver is assisting police with their investigation, but is not in police custody. ASP Stubbs also said police do not believe speed played a factor in the accident.

Investigations continue.
