Rotary Club of South East Nassau and Rotaract Club of South East Nassau. - Recently, there has been much talk regarding food security and the need to produce our own healthy food locally. The Rotary Club of Southeast Nassau and the Rotaract Club of South East Nassau Centennial have partnered with The Elizabeth Estates Children’s Home to build a garden at the home. The purpose of the garden is to teach the children that it is possible to grow healthy non genetically modified foods in just a small area of land. The hope is that the children will be encouraged to grow their own food once they leave the home. The first plants were planted last October and already they have harvested egg plants, tomatoes, kale and salad greens. The garden was recently expanded to include carrots, peppers, cabbage and more tomatoes. Our photo shows members of the clubs standing near the raised garden beds as well as some of the newly planted crops.

On Saturday, January 24, members of The Rotary Club of Southeast Nassau and The Rotaract Club of Southeast Nassau, gathered at All Saints Camp to serve breakfast to the residents at the camp. Armstrong Technology was a co-sponsor of the event, donating funds to help buy the breakfast. A hot and hearty and breakfast was served to all 71 residents by members of the two clubs. The breakfast has become an annual service project for the two clubs, who support the camp in other ways as well.

Rotary day. - Four generations of Rotary came together last Saturday for a fun filled games day at the grounds of Queens College.

Members of the Queens College and Genesis Academy Earlyact Clubs, and the Interact Clubs of Christian Heritage, St. Anne’s and Queens College joined with the Rotaract and Rotary clubs of East Nassau in an afternoon of friendly competition which included sack races, egg and spoon races, tug-o-war, and off course East Nassau’s world famous hamburgers.

The event, which was hailed as a huge success by East Nassau Rotary President Elmer Lowe, was the first of its kind organised by the clubs. “We are all one family of Rotary, but due to our different schedules have never previously all gotten together at one time. This event has helped galvanise our Rotary family and build bonds that will strengthen all our clubs and help us better serve the community in future years. We had 85 members from the clubs in attendance on Saturday, it fills us with hope and pride to see so many of our youth making a commitment to serving their community ” said Mr Lowe.

Early act is a school-based service club for elementary students from ages 5 to 13, while Interact clubs cover students between the ages of 12-18. Rotaract is a service club for young professionals under the age of 30 and Rotary is a service club for professionals and business leaders of all ages.
