Well done, Mr Mitchell

EDITOR, The Tribune.

I would like to publicly commend Mr Fred Mitchell and the immigration department for the progress that has been made at the department of immigration regarding short-term work permits for persons like manufacturer representatives who only visit The Bahamas one week at a time throughout the year to touch base with distributors, or meet with customers.

The agency that I am affiliated with, submit numerous requests throughout the year for visiting manufacturer representatives. Prior to now, it took weeks before we were issued approvals for people who visited quite frequently.

Recently, that all changed! As long as all of the documents have been submitted and the payment made, the turnaround time is immediate! What a difference this makes!

My only suggestion now, is that a short-term work permit application be approved, which would allow reps to visit anytime during a 6-12 month period without having to apply over and over and over and over again, or without having to go through the process of a long-term permit application.

This would save the department and our agency, time, effort and money.

Kudos, and thank you again for improving the process!

This only was allowed to happen because stores would not agree to work together on the issue. The simple solution would be to put in the application (say for a rep from Kellogg's) - and then STOP ordering all Kellogg's products until the application is approved and IN HAND.

But of course, if one store did this - all the others stores would just increase their orders to take up the slack and say to themselves "Well if that fool don't wanna sell cereal, we ga sell it".

That is how we as Bahamians continuously stab each other in the backs, and why we deserve to lose our country to those immigrants who come here and work together as a team.

United we stand, divided we fall - and brother let me tell ya - we fallin' fast.

And this is why the Bahamian economy is so backward. Manufacturers representatives grease the wheels of the economy and they need permits???????????????

How backward and retrogressive. In any other civilised country, trade reps, sales reps, repair technicians and sales engineers do not need permits. When asked that the border, they merely state "on business as a manufacturers rep" and they get waived and waved through.

Anyone who comes representing a manufacturer and makes a sale or a repair is creating economic offset and business for the client.

This kudos to Fred Mitchell is like saying thanks for reducing the daily beatings from 10 to merely 5.

We really could use some enlightenment in this country in all spheres.
