A MAN was sentenced to 45 years in prison yesterday for a murder that occurred during a Junkanoo practice nearly three years ago.

Bruce Colebrooke, 30, of Dumping Ground Corner appeared before Justice Indra Charles facing from 30 years to life imprisonment concerning the October 3, 2012 fatal shooting of Abayomi Sargent at Christie Park.

An anonymous witness who gave video link evidence claimed that he saw Colebrooke shoot Sergeant when the accused and two other men were interrupted during an alleged attempted car theft.

The shooting occurred during the Roots Junkanoo group practice.

Colebrooke, however, denied ever being at the scene, claiming to be at home on the night in question.

In March, a jury unanimously convicted him of murder.

Justice Charles said the 45-year sentence would serve as a deterrent for like-minded individuals. The sentence will run from the date of conviction.

Justice Charles further ordered that Colebrooke undergo anger management counselling while serving his sentence at the Department of Correctional Services.

Keod Smith, Colebrooke’s lawyer, indicated his client’s intent to appeal the jury’s verdict.

Anthony Delaney and Cassie Bethel prosecuted the case.

Sonia Timothy assisted Mr Smith at the trial.
