THE Travel + Leisure magazine has recognised Harbour Island with its “Best Island in the Caribbean” award for the second time.

The award was given based on travellers’ ratings of their experiences in the publication’s annual World’s Best Awards 2015 readers’ survey.

Harbour Island beat islands such as Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and St John, in the US Virgin Islands.

For the last 20 years, the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards have been the travel industry’s leading barometer of the places and companies that are satisfying the most passionate and sophisticated travellers in the United States. According to the magazine’s Editor, Nathan Lump, “the Awards showcase a widely changed travel landscape, one in which exotic destinations, intimate hotels, and one-of-a-kind experiences stand out from the crowd – the preferences of individuals who have been all around the world and are seeking out ever more distinctive travel options.”

Joy Jibrilu, the Director General of Tourism, said yesterday: “We are thrilled to receive this impressive award, a fitting tribute to this lovely island that was once the capital of the Bahamas. Its laid back island appeal still manages to attract the rich, the famous and ordinary persons, who all fall for its unique charm and quaintness.

“We invite everyone to discover the magical pink sand beaches, secluded coves and gorgeous coral reefs of this island treasure, and to enjoy the unique experiences that so impressed Travel + Leisure’s global travellers.”
