A police officer is in critical condition after being found in a car with a gunshot wound.

According to reports, shortly after 1.30am on Saturday, police responded to a report of a traffic accident at East Street South. When they arrived on the scene they found a vehicle on the side of the road with extensive damage. The off duty police constable was inside suffering from the shooting injury and was rushed to hospital.

• Police are searching for two suspects after an armed robbery and sexual assault early on Saturday morning.

According to reports, around 1.00am on Saturday, a woman was sitting in a silver Honda Accord owned by her boyfriend outside of a club on Minnie Street, when two men armed with a handgun jumped into the vehicle and sped off with her. The two men took the woman to an undisclosed area where they sexually assaulted her. The men then abandoned the vehicle with the woman in the area of Soldier Road and East Street. The woman was taken to hospital where she was treated by doctors and later discharged.
