Team Bahamas doesn’t win 2nd straight title but proves to be major force at junior level

ALTHOUGH they did not claim a second consecutive title at the CAC Age Group Championships, the Bahamas still proved to be a major force in the region at the junior level.

The team totalled a combined score of 27,747 and 24 team points at the two-day meet which concluded last night at the Hasley Crawford Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.

Team members included Shaun Miller and Benjamin Clarke in the boys’ 13-14, Davon Johnson and Izaiah Farrington in the boys’ 11-12, Megan Moss and Tylar Lightbourn in the girls’ 13-14 and Anthaya Charlton and Paige Stuart in the girls’ 11-12.

The 11-12 group competes in the pentathlon, which features the long and high jumps, ball throw, 60 metres, 800m (girls) and 1,000m (boys).

The 13-14 group competes in the heptathlon, comprising of the long and high jumps, ball throw, shot put, 60m hurdles, 80m, 1,000m (girls) and 1,200m (boys).

Stuart delivered the top performance for team Bahamas as she claimed the division title with 2,614 points.

A member of the Sun Blazers Track Club, she did 1.35m in the high jump (499 pts), the 60m in 8.12 secs (813 pts), long jump in 4.59m (537 pts), baseball throw with 39.39m (441 pts) and 800m 2:59.15 secs (324 pts).

Charlton, of the Star Trackers Club, finished 13th in the division with 2332 points. She did the high jump in 1.35m (426 pts), 60m in 8.58 secs (732 pts), long jump in 4.11m (440 pts), baseball throw wiith 26.08m (296 pts), 800m in 2:53.22 secs (365 pts).

In the boys pentathlon, Johnson and Farrington finished in fifth and sixth place respectively.

Johnson, of Alliance Athletics, scored 3018 in his fifth place finish. His performance included 60m 7.73 (929 pts), high jump 1.48m (607 pts), baseball throw 42.59m (475 pts), long jump 4.87m (595 pts) and 1,000m 3:41.34 secs (412 pts).

Farrington scored 2984 in the sixth spot.

A member of Kids Athletic Academy, his performance included 60m 8.13 secs (831 pts), high jump 1.54m (655 pts), baseball throw 41.83m (466), long jump 4.87m (595 pts) and 1,000m 3:31.44 (470 pts).

In the girls 13-14 heptathlon, Moss was the team’s top finisher, in sixth place.

A student athlete of Club Monica Athletics, she scored 3,946 points.

Her performances came in the long jump with 4.66m (552 pts), 80m 9.94secs (812 pts), shot put 8.46m (445 pts), 60m hurdles 9.58 secs (671 pts), high jump 1.35m (499 pts), baseball throw 36.09m (410 pts) and 1,000m (3:18.40 secs (557 pts).

Lightbourn, from Fast Forward Athletics, was 18th with 3349 points.

In the long jump she did a distance of 4.72m (564 pts), 80m in 10.32 secs (738 pts), shot put 6.53m (338 pts), 60m hurdles 12.33 secs (671 pts), high jump 1.45m (582 pts), baseball throw 54.61m (584 pts) and 1,000m (4:26.58 secs (200 pts).

In the boys 13-14 heptathlon, Clarke finished sixth with 4794 points while Miller was eighth 4710 points.

Clarke, of X-Treme Athletics had a performance which included - the shot put with 10.65m (553 pts), 80m 9.95 secs (810 pts), long jump 6.29m (862 pts), high jump 1.98m (984 pts), 80m hurdles 12.56 secs (636 pts), baseball throw 43.43m (480 pts) and 1,200m 4:01.64 secs (469 pts).

Miller, a member of Bahamas Speed Dynamics, did the shot put with 10.44m (543 pts), 80m 9.86 secs (828 pts),long jump 5.80m (774 pts), high jump 1.75m (817 pts), 80m hurdles 12.05 secs (697),baseball throw 54.32m (580 pts) and 1,200m 4:01.32 secs (471 pts).
