Welterweight Carl Hield last chance for Team Bahamas to get boxing medal

THE dream for a major international medal at the 17th Pan American Games is over for super heavyweight Keishno Major and light welterweight Rashield Williams. Now it’s all up to welterweight Carl Hield to get the Bahamas on the medal podium in boxing.

On Sunday in his first round match, Major suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss to Lenier Pedro of Cuba at the Exhibition Center. Major, 30, got outscored on all three judges’ scorecards, 30-27, 30-27, 30-25.

Major trailed Williams, who dropped a 2-1 decision to American Luis Feliciano in the first match for the Bahamas on Saturday.

Williams, 25, lost a close match as the judges scorecards read 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.

Hield, 28, will take on Alberto Palmetta of Argentina on Tuesday.

The three boxers are coached by Andre Seymour and Valentino Knowles. They are all coming off their bronze medal performances in the qualifying tournament.

Boxing is the four of the five sports being represented by the Bahamas at the games. Already, the singe tennis player, Philip Major Jr, gymnast Kianna Dean and swimmers Dustin Tynes, Laura Morley, Joanna Evans, Ariel Weech and Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace have competed. Vanderpool-Walace had the most success so far this year, taking a gold and bronze medal.
