THE Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture extends congratulations to our newest ‘Golden Girl’, Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace for her outstanding record-breaking gold medal performance at the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games in the 50m freestyle event.

Vanderpool-Wallace has cemented her status as the Bahamas’ greatest swimmer and is now ranked at No.4 in the world in the 50m freestyle. We wish her continued success in the August World Long Course Championships and the road ahead to the 2016 Rio Olympics.? “We wish her continued success in the August World Long Course Championships and the road ahead to the 2016 Rio Olympics,” the ministry said in the release.

GROUP TEAM

BAHAMAS Association of Athletic Associations president Mike Sands congratulated the performances of the CAC Age Group team, which returned home from Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, with a fourth place finish.?

The team, managed by Sherry Murray-Francis and coached by Marvin Duncombe, Luther Rolle and Tito Moss with Sonia Black as chaperone, relinquished their title to Jamaica. Trinidad & Tobago got second and Barbados was third.?

“There were many outstanding performances especially from Benjamin Clarke in the 14-15 boys high jump where he set a new meet record of 1.98m surpassing the old record of 1.88m,” Sands said. “Paige Stuart won the under 11 and 12 girls division.  All eight members were able to secure individual medals. The mixed relay teams won a silver medal and a bronze and with their combined scores were able to place in the following categories:

Under 11 - 12 Girls - Paige Stuart and Anthaya Charlton - 2nd

Under 11 - 12 Boys - Izaiah Farrington and Davon Johnson -  3rd

Under 13 - 14 Boys - Shaun Miller and Benjamin Clarke - 3rd

Under 13 - 14 Girls - Megan Moss and Tylar Lightbourn - 5th

SUMMER CAMP

THE annual Mario Ford Summer Basketball Camp will continue this week at Windsor Park. Sessions will be held 9am to 1pm daily and its open to players between the ages of five and 15 years.? Activities include baseball, cricket, soccer and softball.? On Thursday, there will be a boxing exhibition put on by boxers from the Ray Minus Jr and Meacher ‘Pain’ Major amateur boxing clubs. The public is invited to come out and support the camp organised by Mario Ford.

THE New Providence Oldtimers Softball Association continued its regular season action over the weekend at the Archdeacon William Thompson Softball Park, Southern Recreation Grounds. Here’s a summary of the games played:

QClub Divers 14,

BS Giants

Philip Paul went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored for the winners. Lester Stuart was the winning pitcher and Arthur Johnson got tagged with the loss.

Dozer Pros 16,

Original Crusaders 13

Greg Smith went 2-for-3 with a home run, driving in seven runs and scoring twice for the winners. Gay Knowles was the winning pitcher and Greg Gardiner suffered the loss.

Hardy XO 10, Corner Boyz 9: Gary Hanna went 3-for-4 with three runs score in the ein. Ivan Hanna was the winning pitcher and Harold ‘Banker’ Fritzgerald was the loser.

Global Rebels 16, QCLUB Divers 2

Warfield Bsin went 2-for-2 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored in the win. Val Munroe was the winning pitcher and Emile Ledee was the loser.

Everette ‘Abe’ Johnson went 4-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored for the winners. Johnny Armbrister was the winning pitcher and Alfred ‘Skater’ Munnings suffered the loss.

THUNDER

THE Bahamas Basketball Federation has announced that its Summer of Thunder Basketball Tournament will be held at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium August 1-24. A number of men’s collegiate teams from the United States of America and Canada will be in town to compete against various local teams.

LOW MAN OUT

TOURNEY

CLAYTON Gardiner & Associates is scheduled to hosting the first ‘Low Man Out’ Tournament in the ‘Boyz of Summer’ bowling series at Mario’s Bowling and Family Entertainment Center. The event is open to all bowlers and is scheduled to start on Saturday.

According to organiser Clayton Gardiner, essentially this is a scratch tournament. The tournament will have four rounds and all bowlers entered will bowl a mandatory of three games. The top 15 bowlers will bowl two more games before the field is cut down to 10. They will then bowl two more games to reduce the size to five. They will then bowl one game to determine their positions from first to fifth places.
