Man shot by police at Arawak cay dies in hospital

POLICE have issued an appeal for witnesses after a man shot by an officer at Arawak Cay died in hospital.

Leroy Hepburn was shot by police after he attempted to attack an officer with a screwdriver near the Arawak Cay Container Port on Saturday. According to police, the 44-year-old Water Street (Big Pond Subdivision) resident died in hospital on Sunday.

It was reported that around 11.30pm officers on patrol saw a man attempting to stab another man with a screwdriver. At the call of the victim, they intervened and ordered the suspect to drop the screwdriver.

The suspect refused and began to “advance violently” towards the officers with the screwdriver. The officers, in fear of their lives and for the safety of the victim, shot the suspect once in his body.

The suspect was taken to hospital, where he later died on Sunday.
