BAHAMAS Communications and Public Officers Union President Bernard Evans is now set to serve a third term as union president after narrowly beating-out his former Secretary General Dino Rolle for the post.

Mr Evans told The Tribune yesterday that Monday’s election was the “toughest and most trying” process of his career.

He added that despite the conflicts that persisted throughout the election process, he is “entirely grateful” that union members recognised his dedication and work ethic.

“The personal attacks, the character assassination, all the allegations; to have risen above those attacks and get out on the campaign trail and connect with everyone, this was worth it,” said Mr Evans.

“Don’t get me wrong I did question the situation. I have already served two terms; and a third term, I don’t think has ever been done.

“But the members have spoken and we have been returned on their behalf.

In addition to Mr Evans, unofficial results show that incumbent BCPOU Vice President Patrick Ferguson was also re-elected. Former assistant Secretary General Sherry Benjamin will now serve as Secretary General, the position left vacant by Dino Rolle.

When contacted by The Tribune yesterday Mr Rolle said: “I am pleased to have served the members of the union over the years.”

“(In a) short period the candidates had to canvas the members and speak with them was the highlight of the whole experience. I respect the decisions of the members.

“As I have said to Mr Evans, who has maintained the confidence of the people, I say to the other successful candidates in wishing them every success during this term.

He hinted at the possibility of contesting the post once again in 2018.

In 2009 Mr Evans ascended to the post of union President after beating former BCPOU President Robert Farquharson.

In 2012, Mr Evans captured 50 per cent of the votes to claim his second stint.

The union represents employees from the Bahamas Telecommunication Corporation, Cable Bahamas, Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas and the Bridge Authority.

Mr Evans successfully led the BCPOU in negotiations for its latest industrial agreement with BTC.

However, throughout that entire ordeal former Secretary General Dino Rolle maintained the union’s strongest voice, leading many to believe that he would emerge as the union’s new President.

The official results are expected to be released today by the Department of Labour.
