Impressive showing for team Bahamas so far at CAGC

IT HAS been an impressive showing thus far for The Bahamas Golf Federation’s team at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Through two days at the event, several Bahamian pairings have been in the hunt, near the top of leaderboards in their respective  divisions at the tournament which continues through August 1.

The most senior members of Team Bahamas - Vernon Wells and Bobby Rose - lead their division as they head the leaderboard in the race for the Higgs and Higgs Trophy.

Also known as the “Super Senior Cup” for males 60 years and older, the Grand Bahamian duo brought in over a decade of national team experience as a pair and have looked the part as they lead by three strokes over the remainder of the field.

The pair has shot -5 under par, after an opening round 70 (-2) and a second round 69 (-2) for a total of 139 strokes.

They are followed by Fabian Lee Foon and Barry Ferdinand of Trinidad and Tobago, the only other team in the field under par, with a -2 under par (142).

In the race for the Ramon Baez Trophy, or “Mid Amateur Cup” for males 35 years and over - Peter and John McIntosh are currently ranked third after shooting an even 144 through two rounds.

The pair of cousins were in second place after they opened with a -2 under 70, but fell back a spot after they shot a +2 over 74 in round two.

Peter is a multiple BGF national amateur champion and equally a repeat member of Hoerman Cup teams while John is a first time CAGC national team member.

Juan Campusano and Bienvenido Guerrero of the Dominican Republic are in first place at -3 under while Carlsen Leacock and Elvis Medford of Barbados are second at -1 under.

In the Hoerman Cup for regular players, the Bahamas’ team of Benjamin Davis Jr, Thomas Bethel, Devaughn Robinson, Asif Robinson, Elijah Delancy and Nolan Johnson are currently seventh of the eight groups at +63 over.

Devaughn Robinson, a five time former member of Team Bahamas’ CAJGC and CAGC national teams, has been the top player of the team and is tied for third in the field at +2 over (148). He shot an opening round 76, followed by a second round 72 yesterday. Davis is tied for No.15 after shooting 155, +11 over.

The BGF’s 2014 national amateur champion and a repeated member of Team Bahamas for both the CAGC and CAJGC national teams, shot an 80 in the opening round and improved to a 75 yesterday.

Asif Robinson is ranked No.31 and shot +21 over (165) thus far with scores of 83 and 82. He has been a member of several CAJGC national teams and is making his second appearance at the CAGC.

Delancy, in his debut with the CAGC team after moving up from the junior ranks, has shot +27 over (171) thus far with scores of 91 and 80.

Bethel is a repeat BGF national amateur champion and currently the BGF’s 2015 national amateur champion who has represented the Bahamas on numerous CAGC and CAJGC national teams.

Johnson, also in his CAGC debut, rounds out the field at No.40 with a score of +38 over (182) and rounds of 92 and 90.

Johnthan Newman of Jamaica leads individually at -1 and his team is top ranked at +26 over.

In the George Teale Cup for ladies, the Bahamas’ team of Inecia Rolle, Taneka Sandiford and Brianne Robinson are tied for fifth at +43 over.

Sandiford has been the top performer for the team thus far in ninth place with a score of +21.

A repeat member of the George Teale Cup and a former contender for the 2015 Bahamas’ representative spot in the 2015 PureSilk Bahamas LPGA Classic has shot 165 and +21, opening with an 80 and following with an 85 yesterday.

Rolle follows one spot behind with a score of 166 and +22 over. Rolle, the winner of the BGF’s 2015 President’s Cup, shot identical rounds of 83.

Robinson, the winner of the BGF Ladies’ 2014 national amateur champion/President’s Cup competition and a former member of the 2014 George Teale Cup is tied for No.21 with a total score +42 (186) after rounds of 88 and 98.

Puerto Rico has produced three of the top five players in the field and lead the team score at +21 over.

In the “Senior Cup” for men 50 years and over and competing for the Francis/Steele-Perkins Cup,  George Swann and Horace Miller-Major are ranked No.7 at +4 over.

Both former members of CAGC teams, they shot identical rounds of 74 for a total of 148.

Carlos Baynes and Richard Camacho of Trinidad and Tobago are leading the field at -3 under.

At the CAGC, the Bahamas is joined by nine other member countries of the Caribbean Golf Association at the Half Moon Golf Resort and Spa and the Cinnamon Hill Golf Club.

Harry Fountain serves as the coach and Fred Wright is the team’s administrator.
