Wells, Rose lead race for trophy

HEADED into the final day of competition at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships, one pairing of Team Bahamas will attempt to cling to their position atop the leaderboard while others face an uphill climb toward contention.

Through three days at the event hosted at the Half Moon Golf Resort and Spa and the Cinnamon Hill Golf Club in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the most senior members of Team Bahamas continue to turn out the top performances.

Despite playing their worst round of the tournament thus far, Vernon Wells and Bobby Rose continue to lead in their division in the race for the Higgs and Higgs Trophy.

The pair leads the Super Senior field at -5 under par, after they shot an even 72 yesterday. They had opening round 70 (-2) and a second round 69 (-2) for a total of 211 strokes. They are still followed by Fabian Lee Foon and Barry Ferdinand of Trinidad and Tobago, the only other team in the field under par, but lost a stroke as they shot +1 yesterday. They stand at -1 under par with a score of 215 while Peter Chin and Easton Williams of Jamaica are third at +1 over par (217).

In the race for the Ramon Baez Trophy, or “Mid Amateur Cup” for males 35 years and over - Peter and John McIntosh are currently tied for third with a +4. They shot a +4 yesterday, after they opened with a -2 under 70, but fell back a spot after they shot a +2 over 74 in round two for a total score of 220. Juan Campusano and Bienvenido Guerrero of the Dominican Republic are running away from the remainder of the field at -8 and a total of 208.

In the Hoerman Cup for regular players, the Bahamas’ team of Benjamin Davis Jr, Thomas Bethel, Devaughn Robinson, Asif Robinson, Elijah Delancy and Nolan Johnson remain seventh of the eight groups at +91 over.

Devaughn Robinson, a five-time former member of Team Bahamas’ CAJGC and CAGC national teams, has been the top player of the team and is second in the field at +2 over (218). He had the best round of any player in the 40-man field yesterday with a -2 under par 70. He shot an opening round 76, followed by a second round 72.

Davis is tied for No.13 after shooting 231, +16 over par. Yesterday, he shot a 76 in the third round to follow an 80 in the opening round  and 75 in round two.

Asif Robinson is tied at No.31 and shot +34 over (250) thus far with scores of 83, 82 and 85. He has been a member of several CAJGC national teams and is making his second appearance at the CAGC.

Delancy, in his debut with the CAGC team after moving up from the junior ranks, has shot +40 over (256) thus far with scores of 91, 80 and 85.

Johnson, also in his CAGC debut moved up two spots after he shot 85 in the third round yesterday. He is currently tied at No.38 with a score of +51 over (267) and previous rounds of 92 and 90.

Johnthan Newman of Jamaica leads individually at -1 and his team is top ranked at +37 over.

In the George Teale Cup for ladies, the Bahamas’ team of Inecia Rolle, Taneka Sandiford and Brianne Robinson fell one spot yesterday and are in sixth place at +65 over par.

Robinson, was the top performer of the trio yesterday with a score of 82, +10 over par. She moved up two spots to No.19 at +52 (268) and had opening rounds of 88 and 98.

Rolle is the top overall performer of the group at No. 14 and +34 over par and a score of 250.

The winner of the BGF’s 2015 President’s Cup, she shot an 84 yesterday which followed identical rounds of 83.

Sandiford fell six spots to No.15 after she shot an 88 in round three. She opened with an 80 and followed with an 85 in round two.

Puerto Rico has produced two of the top five players in the field and lead the team score at +32 over.

In the “Senior Cup” for men 50 years and over and competing for the Francis/Steele-Perkins Cup, George Swann and Horace Miller-Major are now tied for sixth place after they shot a -1 under par 71 yesterday. They stand at +3 (219) after identical opening rounds of 74. Carlos Baynes and Richard Camacho of Trinidad and Tobago are leading the field at -5 under.

Harry Fountain serves as the coach and Fred Wright is the team’s administrator.
