Immigrants detained over weekend

A NUMBER of illegal immigrants have been apprehended over the Labour Day weekend in Bahamian waters.

On Friday evening, the US Coast Guard intercepted a white 24ft vessel with five Jamaican and Haitian nationals on board, consisting of three adult men, an adult woman and an infant. Officers of the Marine Unit assisted in taking the immigrants to Grand Bahama.

A 34-year-old Bahamian of South Bahamia, Grand Bahama, was also on board and was arrested and taken into custody. Yesterday afternoon, a joint operation between the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the Royal Bahamas Police Force resulted in the Defence Force vessel P-130 apprehending a small speed boat with three Haitian migrants on board off Hole In The Wall, South Abaco.

Two other migrants (including a Bahamian) were apprehended by police in Abaco near Hole In The Wall. The five migrants were taken to Sandy Port, Abaco, where they were handed over to immigration and police authorities for further processing.
