TWO Bahamian men are in police custody after they were discovered with more than $1 million worth of marijuana in Andros yesterday morning.

The drug discovery occurred shortly after 3am.

Officer-in-charge of the Drug Enforcement Unit, Superintendent Samuel Butler said responding to intelligence on Sunday afternoon, DEU officers spotted a go fast vessel in the area of North Andros.

“DEU officers along with Marine Support Services and local officers at North Andros, along with DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) partners responded and sometime around 3am on Monday they were able to seize a white F-150 truck,” Supt Butler said.

“The truck was loaded with 46 packages and four five gallon buckets, each containing marijuana. Two Bahamian suspects, ages 45 and 51, both residents of North Andros, were taken into custody. The drugs weigh 100 pounds and have a street value of $1 million.”

Supt Rolle said the men were brought to the capital to face charges.

He also said this latest drug bust is the biggest so far for the year.

Million dollars - hah! In Nassau an ounce goes for as low as $80 and the top shelf stuff goes for around $300 an ounce. BC Bud hydroponic from Canada is higher. Haitian stuff is cheaper, and Columbian stuff goes to about $450 an ounce. The street value of these 100 pounds is about $480,000. I know this because all of my Family Islands cousins, PLP supporters all, used to run drugs for a living (with the odd bit of fishing thrown in). Every time there was nothing but conch and coconut in the fridge, it was time to haul square grouper.
