SR NATIONALS

REGISTRATION

THE Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations has announced that the final registration for the Open National Championships is today. The Nationals is scheduled for June 26-27 and will serve as a qualifier for the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canda, in July and the IAAF World Championships in Beijng, China, in August.

Persons who haven’t done so can register by contacting either BAAA president Mike Sands, treasurer Philippa Arnett-Willie or meet director Trevor Moss. Online registration can be done by logging onto www.baaabahamas.com/events/baaa-national-championships-2015-day1

Registration packages will be available for pick up at the athletes’ entrance at which time the registration fee of $20 can be paid.

“Unfortunately, at this juncture we have not received confirmation on the usage of the new stadium. Should this change you will be duly notified. In the meantime, plans are being made for the TAR Annex (old TAR),” according to a press release.

Warm up will take place on the 150m warm up strip outside of the ‘old’ TAR where ice baths will be provided.

Additionally, please also ensure that your hotel accommodations are confirmed directly with andre.newbold@melia.com ‘via email only’ in order to receive the special room rate of $175 per night, inclusive of taxes, based on double occupancy.

Further, the hotel to stadium transfers time on competition days is being confirmed and will be provided under separate cover.

Athletes are also reminded of the Athletes Annual General Meeting (AAGM), at the Ministry of Youth and Sports 9:30am on Saturday (June 27).

BAAA SWEEPSTAKES

IT is estimated that it will cost the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations in excess of $225,000 to cover the expenses of sending its various national teams off to compete in the international meets this year.

“In our continuing efforts to raise the much-needed funds we have been successful in negotiating with the IAAF World Relays LOC the management of the World Relays Sweepstakes where the prize is an eleven-night expense paid trip for two to Beijing, China, for the IAAF World Championships, including $1,000 cash per person,” said BAAA president Mike Sands.

The tickets are priced at just $10 and in exchange, the BAAA has been guaranteed 70 per cent of the net sales after expenses.

“One of our major sponsors, Island Games, has engaged Carter Marketing to create a major marketing and promotional and advertising campaign to launch and promote the Sweepstakes on ‘our’ behalf,” said Sands of the promotion that will begin June 26 and end on the drawing day of August 1. “Our goal is to sell 30,000 tickets during this five-week period.”

Carter Marketing has engaged Rupert Roberts and Super Value as a ‘supporting’ corporate citizen for the distribution of the Sweepstakes. The only thing that is being required of the BAAA is to provide the personnel/manpower for the sale of the tickets at the Super Value stores.

“It should also be noted that, as an incentive each seller will be given $10 for every ten tickets sold,” Sands said. “There are ten tickets per book. I believe that our athletes and others could find this rewarding. This is an opportunity that ‘we’ should take the most advantage of, for the sake of ‘our’ athletes and programme’s benefit.

“I therefore implore each and everyone of you to provide some manpower during the periods in question. A schedule is being developed for your information and planning. Once completed you will be requested to provide the support personnel.”
