Dr Rollins’ resignation

EDITOR, The Tribune.

The resignation from the PLP of Dr Rollins seems to have brought out further craziness of even qualified attorneys pontificating totally irrationally that Dr Rollins should resign his seat.

Under our system, the PLP does not own the parliamentary seat of Ft Charlotte – Dr Rollins was nominated by five-six residents, paid the deposit and when the votes were counted he was declared the winner, not the PLP, Dr Rollins was declared the Member of Parliament.

If what these certain attorneys hold any water then when Messrs Christie and Ingraham left the PLP there should have been bye-elections and with certainty modern political history would not be as we know it as Independent candidates without the support of one or the other principle parties are guaranteed to lose.

I see not in the Rollins resignation any real political problem in comparison I see in the judgment of the honourable Speaker – he might have his personal views, but rules run the House of Assembly not “heart”.

I wonder what the hierarchy of the PLP are going to do with the current person who sits in the seat of Speaker after the Rollins’ incident – that is the real question in my thoughts.

For sure, the Prime Minister was scheduled to speak and do the summing up as Minister of Finance Thursday morning – somehow he had a speaking engagement at COB – what really was the reason for cutting the Budget debate short?
