Caribbean BBQ Association. - More than 65 interested and eager chefs attended the Nassau Smoking Hot BBQ Training Camp on Wednesday at the College of the Bahamas. Among the crowd were professional chefs, students, regular cooks and judges for this Saturday’s Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned event. The seminar taught the art of smoking with beef, brisket, pork ribs and shoulder butt, all in preparation for the upcoming Smoking Hot BBQ Challenge – or your backyard.

Pitmaster Mike Compton, president of the Caribbean BBQ Association, gave demonstrations on prepping and cooking in a low and slow manner. Also, hands-on BBQ techniques including flavor infusion for rubs, marinades and wood.

Liz Wunderlich from the US Meat Export Federation was on hand and awarded the graduates with a pit master certification along with Low and slow manual reference guide, and invaluable professional advice on slow cooking and indirect heating methods.

This course was developed in collaboration with Texas A&M University, US Meat Export5 Federation, The Texas Beef Council and award-winning BBQ Champion Gary Howard and the CarribbeanBBQ Association. The seminar was provided by Sysco/Bahamas Food Service, Carroibbean BBQ Association and the US Meat Export Federation.

A donation was made to COB Junior Culinary Team for the Copa Culinaria event in the Dominican Republic.

The third annual Nassau Smoking Hot BBQ Competition will be held this Saturday, June 27, at Malcom Park (BFAS Soccer facility two doors down from the Green Parrot Nassau) The gates open at 1pm and admission is $20 for adults and $5 for kids. There will be over 3,700 pounds of meat given away to the attendees.

Cycling Club Bahamas. - Upcoming events:

Tomorrow - leaving 6am sharp from Harbour Bay Shopping Centre in front of First Caribbean Bank 30 miles headed west. In order to complete this ride, it is recommended that you have done some recent cycling. Leaving P/I Bridges optional at the end. The pace will range from 18–20+mph, two-hour duration.

Sunday - leaving 6am sharp from Harbour Bay Shopping Centre in front of First Caribbean Bank, 40-50 miles headed east. This ride is not recommended if you have not cycled recently or first timers. P/I Bridges optional at the end. The pace will range from 18–20+mph, 3-3.5 hour duration (cyclists are invited to join in anywhere along the route).

Morning rides west - Wednesday and Friday, 4:45am Cable Beach Police Station, West Bay Street, 20-mile ride route. Headed east to Montague and return. One-hour duration. Cyclists capable of 14+mph welcome. Ride leaves promptly! Cyclists are invited to join in anywhere along the route. Afternoon rides west - Tuesdays and Thursdays, leaving 5:30pm sharp, parking lot next to Lyford Cay Gas Station. 18 or 24 miles depending if you do second loop. This is an advanced cyclist’s ride. The pace will range from 20+mph. Intermediate 18-22mph, see Spyder.

Morning ride east - Tuesdays & Thursdays, leaving 5am sharp - start/end Seagrapes Shopping Centre-(under the big sign), East Prince Charles Drive: @1-1 1/2 hour duration Cyclists capable of 14+mph welcome - Prince Charles Dr-Eastern Road-Shirley St-Church St-East Bay-Eastern Road- Prince Charles. Please have lights attached to your bike.

July 4 - Saturday, 2015 National Time Trial will be held on, starting at 7:30am.

July 18 - 7am, Spanish Wells, Eleuthera. The Spanish Wells Cycling Association invites you to participate in their 1st Annual Cycling Road Race. The race will be Criterium style 2.4 mile laps for 50 min. There will be a 15-49 yr cat, Masters cat, 10-14yr cat. This race will be run the same weekend as the Legendary Spanish Wells Fisherman’s Fest. Come for the race and stay for the Fisherman’s Fest. www.fishermensfest.com. Interact Club at Queen’s College. - The Interact Club at Queen’s College, sponsored by the Rotary Club of East Nassau, recently donated $1,000 each to the Ranfurly Home and the Sir Victor Sasoon Heart Foundation. The funds were raised from several projects throughout the year.

The Ranfurly Home is a privately operated orphanage in Nassau, Bahamas which serves the local community. It was founded in 1956 and has the capacity to house 45 children ranging from 5 to 20 years old.

For more than 50 years, the Sir Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation has assisted more than 4,000 young Bahamians with heart ailments. They work in partnership with the Bahamas Heart Association to raise awareness of heart disease and what people can do to live a heart healthy lifestyle.

Rotary Club of East Nassau. - The Rotary Club of East Nassau, and their Rotaract Club, held their presidential changeover party on June 20. Aide to the RI President Barry Rassin hosted the event at his residence, which was catered by a Nepalese chef who assisted in the recent RCEN campaign for Nepal. The campaign raised more than $10,000 in aid. Outgoing President Elmer Lowe graciously handed over leadership to Jason Robertson, son of past president and past district governor John Robertson. The new 2015-2016 RCEN board was introduced with the assistance of District Governor Felix Stubbs. The board is composed of both new and experienced members. Jason will be advised by past president Joanne Smith.
