Assistant Commissioner of Police Emrick Seymour cautioned businesses and homeowners to secure their properties after police took more guns and ammunition off the streets in Grand Bahama and made several arrests this week.

“We are proud of the fact that we have in the past 36 hours recovered four firearms and quite a number of ammunition off the streets of Grand Bahama,” he told reporters at Police Headquarters.

Mr Seymour said that the police have been very concerned about the number of illegal firearms on the streets.

“An illegal firearm in the hands of a criminal is a very dangerous thing, and we are relentless in our efforts to find and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he added.

The police chief warned that possession of a handgun is illegal and anyone with one is breaking the law.

Another concern for the police is the number of housebreaking and stealing incidents occurring on the island.

Mr Seymour advised members of the public to take steps to secure their homes and businesses properly.

“Recently, we have had many reports of break-ins of homes and at a local resort, and the police mounted an elaborate policing effort into these matters which resulted in some arrests,” he said.

He indicated that police are continuing their investigations and expect to make further arrests.

ACP Seymour said the public are the eyes and hears of the police and he is appealing to residents to report crime and any suspicious activity to the police.

“Criminals are out there . . . so please ensure that you employ the greatest degree of security at your homes and businesses, and report all acts of crimes no matter how insignificant it may seem; pay attention to your surroundings and call us if you see anything out of the ordinary,” he said.
