THE successor to George Markantonis as president and managing director of Atlantis resort was yesterday named as Paul Burke.

Mr Burke takes on the role following the recent resignation of Mr Markantonis to take on a “wonderful opportunity” in Las Vegas after almost ten years at Atlantis.

He is to become the president and chief operating officer of The Venetian, The Palazzo and The Sands Expo Centre, all part of the Las Vegas Sands Group.

Also confirmed yesterday was the promotion of Stuart Bowe to the position of senior vice-president and general manager of hotel operations.

Andrea Balkan, managing partner at Brookfield, said: “Paul has a deep and varied background in the hospitality industry, including serving as the chief operating officer at Atlantis.

“Paul is fully immersed in the Atlantis culture, and we are confident that he and his veteran team will work to maintain the resort as a world-class destination we are proud to be associated with.”

Burke has served as a senior executive in the industry for more than 30 years and has an extensive background in operations.

Prior to being named as Atlantis’ chief operating officer in 2011, he was executive vice-president/principal of Noble Investment Group. He has also previously worked with Interstate Hotels & Resorts, Starwood Hotels and Resorts and ITT Sheraton Corporation.

He said: “My new position at Atlantis is something I have worked towards my entire career and all my previous professional experience has prepared me for this role,” said Burke. “I am very thankful to George and Paul O’Neil for their mentorship over the years that have contributed to this fantastic opportunity.”

Markantonis said that Burke has been both an excellent partner and a great friend. “It has made my decision much easier to know that I’m leaving this fine establishment in such capable hands,” said Markantonis.

Mr Bowe said of his promotion: “I am thrilled by this opportunity to oversee Atlantis’s Beach, Coral, and Royal Towers operations.”
