MIDDLE State University President Dr Sidney McPhee held a book signing for his publication, China Through the Eyes of an American University President, yesterday afternoon at the College of The Bahamas’ Chapter One bookstore.

The book, published in June 2012 by the Hanban-Confucius Institute, is a “photo essay” of China that chronicles over 100 pictures illustrating some of the “texture and nuances” in the country.

Included are images of Dunhuang, the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall of China, as well as photos of Chinese children, elderly Chinese people in addition to Chinese cuisine.

“The book exposes the really vast culture of China,” Dr McPhee said. “It opens the door of folks who have not visited China to see the diversity, the ethnicity, the culture of China.”

According to Dr McPhee, the book covers 30 years of China’s development, and contains pictures from the 40 plus Chinese cities he has visited.

The book is printed in two languages: English and Mandarin.

In 2010, Dr McPhee was appointed as senior advisor to the chief executive of the Hanban-Confucius Institute headquarters in Beijing.

In December 2013, Dr McPhee received the Confucius’ Institute’s Individual Excellence Award during the 8th annual Global Institutes Conference in Beijing, China – the highest award given by China’s Ministry of Education.

The deputy premier of China presented the award to him.
