What’s the punishment?

EDITOR, TheTribune.

The revelation that the dormitory destroyed by fire at BAMSI was never insured doesn’t come as a surprise considering the way this and other government contracts are and have been awarded in the past.

It further underscores the need for the thorough and unimpeded investigation recently announced by the PAC Chairman Hubert Chipman into BAMSI and other ongoing government contracts, and if there is evidence of wrong doing the law must be allowed to take its course.

It also emphasises the need for a FOIA to become law as well as for an open tender process for all government contracts to be mandatory under the law.

The contractor in this instance should be dismissed and be made liable for the damages. The Ministers of Works and Agriculture & Fisheries should resign immediately or be fired for their duplicitous behaviour and actions.

As a licensed Bahamian contractor, I am all too well aware of what the consequences would be should one of us who aren’t a part of the clique be confronted with a similar situation; if one of us could be jailed for allegedly stealing electricity, please tell me Prime Minister what penalty fits this crime?

In this country we reward those who cheat and steal.

There will be no penalty; and you can take that to the bank.
