Dithering over our future

EDITOR, The Tribune.

BEC is a living example of how not to run a business. It’s a classic example of why a government should not get involved in business/enterprises. It’s also a ticking time bomb to the progress of The Bahamas.

We pay five times more for power than consumers pay in Florida. This is largely due to mismanagement by both the FNM and the PLP over the years.

The only way to correct the problem is to sell BEC to an efficient private specialist organisation. There will be immense change/pain when this happens.

The cronyism and corruption will be dismantled by whoever buys the shambolic BEC. Whomever buys BEC will have to invest $500m+ to upgrade the antiquated and outdated power plants. Successive governments have invested the minimum funds to keep the two principal power plants at Clifton & Blue Hill limping along. Baha Mar is about to come on line with huge power demands. I predict a miserable summer ahead for the rest of us with power cuts on a daily basis.

To continue to ignore BEC in the hope it will muddle along is a long term disaster for this island but a short term minor headache for the government.

Unfortunately we have the ultimate ditherer at the helm so do not expect decisive leadership on this key infrastructure matter any time soon.

** See the article "View from Afar" in today's online Tribune - it covers this story very well, esp. the comment by yours truly.
