THE Court of Appeal yesterday welcomed a new justice following the appointment of Guyanese attorney Stella Maureen Crane-Scott during a brief ceremony at Government House.

The 58-year-old most recently served as a judge in the High Court of Barbados, having been appointed in April, 2008.

In 2005 Mrs Crane-Scott was appointed Queen’s Counsel and appointed as the Registrar of the Supreme Court in Barbados. The mother of two called her appointment a “honour and a privilege”, adding that she is looking forward to many years of service in the Bahamas.

Mrs Crane-Scott obtained both her LLB and LLM degrees from the University of the West Indies in 1977 and 1992 respectively. She was called to the bar in 1985.

Her appointment is consistent with comments by the Court of Appeal president, Anita Allen, during the 2014 retirement ceremony of Justice Christopher Blackman and Justice Stanley John.

At the time Justice Allen insisted that the moves, along with the elevation of Supreme Court Justice Jon Isaacs to Justice in the Court of Appeal, marked the entrance of “new generation of justices of appeal”.

So this is not an ADDITIONAL judge? Just a replacement?

So there are not going to be any additional judges to serve in all of these "new" courts that might be completed on of these years?

We really love murderers in this country, it seems.
