THE 2015 Bahamas Billfish Championship, a four-round series, opened at Guana Cay last week with Jichi, owned by Luis Isaias and captained by Eugenio Lebron, taking top honours.

Wave Paver (owned by Jr Davis and captained by Russell Sinclair) and Torta (owned by Joe Posillico and captained by Artie Meadows) took second and third place respectively.

The competition featured a 597lb Blue Marlin on the docks caught by Full Time and a grand slam by Jichi.

The second leg of the series takes place at Green Turtle Cay from May 6-9.

So far this year’s championship has been marked by overall goodwill on the docks and good times both on the boats and at the tournament festivities. Some notable parties and dinners in Guana Cay included an opening night captain’s meeting and dinner at Grabbers Bar & Grill, a pig roast at Nippers and a raucous awards dinner at Sunsetters restaurant at Orchid Bay Marina.

The winners’ trophy was a Vetus Windlass with a gold-plated billfish on it. The BBC has a new owner, Active Interest Media, and the tournament’s major sponsors included AIG, Costa, ZF Marine, Vetus-Maxwell, Lewis Marine Supply, Cat Marine Power, Belize Beach Resort & Spa, and Aqualuma.
