THE GRANTS Town Post Office was extensively damaged yesterday after a fire from an adjacent building on Vesey Street spread to its roof and one of the rooms.

Assistant Superintendent Walter Evans, head of police Fire Services, said firefighters received a call shortly after 6am alerting them to a structural fire in the area of Blue Hill Road.

“When officers arrived on the scene on Vesey Street, they met a two-story building completely engulfed in flames. The fire also spread to the roof of the Grants Town Post Office, which was less than 10 feet away,” he said.

“We called units from Cable Beach, (Police) Headquarters and Paradise Island to assist with outing the blaze. The fire was extinguished shortly thereafter but the post office’s roof received extensive fire damage and the inside received water damage.

“The other building was completely destroyed. At this time it is too early to say just how much damage was done or what caused the fire.”

Supt Evans said vagrants occupied the abandoned building, but no one was hurt during the fire.

The post office will be closed until further notice but patrons with mail boxes can continue to clear them until Monday, according to the acting postmaster general.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and investigations continue.

Wonder how long before the roof simply caves in at the main post office downtown? That building is ready to collapse.

Please save this building. It has been our post box for as long as I can remember and I love the old building.
