FOR more than an hour and a half on Sunday night, they rocked and sang along as he sat stationary on a stool, plucking away at his guitar, singing songs millions have grown to love.

The lively crowd of nearly 2,000 gathered in the Grand Ballroom at Atlantis, Paradsie Island, to witness American singer-songwriter Jon Bon Jovi deliver an exquisite set of performances, heralding the start of the music concert series that will be a major part of the resort’s Summer In Atlantis activities.

Strobe lights illuminated the crowd as Bon Jovi delivered acoustic performances of his solo tunes, lesser known group B-sides and – of course – some of the band’s greatest hits. He was backed by a violinist, pianist and guitarist, all of whom doubled as back-up singers.

He sang 21 songs overall, mixing less familiar ones like “Destination Anywhere” with international hits like “You Give Love a Bad Name”, “It’s My Life” and “Never Say Goodbye”.

The highlight of the night, however, unmistakably came during the last ten minutes, with “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Wanted: Dead or Alive.” The crowd was on its feet as they sang along and gave Bon Jovi a standing ovation.

His performance came a day after a near sell-out crowd saw author and comedian Chelsea Handler deliver a raunchy comedic act as part of her “Uganda Be Kidding Me” tour. She was preceded on stage by American stand-up comedian Josh Wolf, who incited plenty of belly laughs.

Atlantis’ next show will feature legendary American singer Tony Bennett and pop star Lady Gaga on June 13. In addition, an in-house magic show with magician and illusionist Rob Blake will take place on June 24. And a Labour Day weekend show starring Keith Urban will take place on September 5.

Tickets for all the events are available for purchase.
