Stage all set for thrilling finish as Sadie Curtis leads the pack

WITH just seven points separating teams at the top of the standings, the stage is set for a thrilling finish today on day three of the New Providence Public Primary School’s Sports Association Track and Field Championships.

Sadie Curtis PS leads the 20-team field with 103 points, followed closely by Cleveland Eneas PS in second place with 96 at the conclusion of day two of the three day meet hosted at the original Thomas A Robinson stadium.

The defending champions Sybil Strachan PS, remains in third with 83 points as the three schools emerged well ahead of the remainder of the teams in the standings.

Claridge PS is fourth with 62 points, Yellow Elder PS is fifth with 55.50 points, Thelma Gibson PS is sixth with 52 points, Albury Sayles is seventh with 39 points, Eva Hilton PS is in eighth with 28 points, just ahead of ninth place TG Glover PS with 27 points and Stephen Dillet PS rounds out the top 10 with 23 points.

The remainder of the field includes CW Sawyer PS (22), Columbus PS (13), Gerald Cash PS (13), Woodcock PS (12.50), Palmdale PS (12), Ridgeland PS (10), Gambier PS (nine), Garvin Tynes PS (six), Sandilands PS (five) and Adelaide PS (four).

The divisions contested at the meet are: A - 11 and 12-year-olds, B - 9 and 10-year- olds, C - 7 and 8-year-olds and D – 5 and 6-year-olds.

Middle distance events were the main feature on day two with Sadie Curtis figuring prominently on the medal podium.

Their Schuvens Liska led the way in the boys C division with an impressive performance in the 800m in a time of 2:58.79s, more than three seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.

They also had a major presence in the field on day two. Chelsea Daxson took gold in a pair of jumps with 8.33m in the triple and 4.11m in the long jump respectively.

The 200m produced several exciting finishes with athletes separated by just 10ths of seconds on the medal podium.

In the girls C, Serenity Trembly of Yellow Elder took first place in 32.59s, while Zaria Fowler of Cleveland Eneas was second in 32.82s and Shamyah Etirne of Garvin Tynes and Tyniesha Thompson of Stephen Dillet tied for third at 32.85s.

In the boys C, Johnlendon WIlson of Sybil Strachan took first in 29.56s, Garvin MxKenzie and Christopher Black, both of Cleveland Eneas finished second and third in 29.85s and 29.88s respectively.

CW Sawyer teammates Tanae Woodside and Paige Archer took first and second in the girls B final in 28.85s and 29.21s.

Carlos Brown of Columbus Primary took the boys B in 27.28s, followed by Richard Jean-Charles of Sybil Strachan in 27.63s and Kwame McKinney of Sadie Curtis was third in 27.85s.

Prior to the meet, Joel Lewis, acting deputy director of education, underscored the importance of the meet and identifying young talent.

“The New Providence Public Primary Schools Sports Association Annual Track and Field Championship brings together the best of the primary school athletes to compete in organised, friendly and enthusiastic competition,” he said.

“The meet is the foundation for bridging the gap from primary school to high school sports as is indicated by this year’s theme, ‘It Begins with Us.’”

Today will be highlighted by the 75m, 100m and 400m sprints when action gets underway at 9am.
