EVERY year, war veterans worldwide are remembered for their bravery and service to defend and protect democracy during the First and Second World Wars.

Henry Kellman, who resides in Grand Bahama, is the last of the living Bahamian veterans of World War II.

This year, plans have been announced for the 17th Annual Remembrance Day Parade in Grand Bahama on Sunday, November 8.

Cecil Thompson, retired under-secretary in the Ministry for Grand Bahama, said the parade is being held in commemoration of the millions of men and women worldwide, including more than 800 Bahamians, who fought to preserve democratic traditions during the darkest and most perilous hours of the First and Second World Wars.

The parade was established in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Grand Bahama Principals and Vice Principals Association and Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, where a remembrance service is held every year.

It begins at 3pm from the Pro-Cathedral of Christ the King Church. All schools, uniformed youth organisations, church groups and local marching bands will march to the Mary, Star of the Sea Church for the service at 4pm.

Mr Thompson said that Mr Kellman, who is 87, has the distinction of being the last living Bahamian World War II veteran and has shared his stories with students.

Although his mother was not happy with his decision, Mr Kellman joined the Royal Air Force at the age of 16 even though it was required for one to be 18 years of age.

He did go overseas to join the men and women on the battlefield, but he and his comrades (RAF 11th Battalion) travelled to Nassau for training.

Mr Thompson said that it should also be noted that the late Sir Jack Hayward, OBE, honorary chairman of the Grand Bahama Port Authority, was also one of the illustrious veterans of the Second World War. He served in the Royal Air Force in the Burma campaign.
