A MAN was charged with housebreaking and stealing in the Freeport Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Kenrick Sears, of Freeport, appeared before Magistrate Debbye Ferguson to face allegations that on October 21, he broke into the home of Cassandra Munnings and stole a white Samsung Galaxy cellular phone valued at $500.

Sears, who was represented by Brian Hanna, pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected for a summary trial in the Magistrate’s Court.

Prosecutor Berkley Simmons objected to bail noting that the offences fall under the Bail Act, which removes jurisdiction to grant bail from the Magistrate‘s Court.

Mr Hanna said he intends to make an application for bail on behalf of his client to the Supreme Court and requested that the magistrate hold Sears in remand in Freeport until Friday when the application could be heard.

The matter was adjourned to February 18, 2016.
