Doctors hospital team triumphs in Chickcharney relays

AFTER two individual race events, the organisers of the Chickcharney Challenge have made a successful transition to their first relay event.

The Chickcharney Relays were hosted on Saturday at Clifford Park, featuring 13 teams and scores of participants.

Team Doctors Hospital emerged as the winners after they made a brilliant showing through the obstacles, losing the least points for failing or passing obstacles

Other participating teams included Well Muddo Sic, Rebels, Avengers, Chargers, Terminators. EFG Bank Lyford, EFG Bank Downtown, Caribbean Coastal Services a trio of  team Scallywags - A, B, and C.

The local obstacle-course-run pioneers, who recently donated a wheelchair to the Bahamas National Council For Disability out of proceeds from their inaugural events, developed the exciting 400m-plus sprint course for four-man relay teams.

Part of the proceeds from this event will go toward helping victims of Hurricane Joaquin.

“We wanted to bring the excitement of relay competition to the grand excitement of obstacle course running. Think American Ninja Warrior, but with Bahamians,” said Jason Taylor, president of Chickcharney Chirren.

The group’s first two events were three-mile obstacle courses inside Clifton Heritage Park. Each event, held in February and April this year, featured 10 to 12 obstacles.

The Chickcharney Relays, whose major sponsors are Island Luck and Suntee, will be an annual family event. The group contends that this will be the most exciting fitness event on the island for the year.

“And the beauty is it’s for everyone,” said the group’s chief operating officer, Tokoyo Duncombe. “This event is not for the elite athlete. This event is for everyone who wants to challenge themselves and other teams to a fun relay race, with cool prizes at the finish.”

The Chickcharney Chirren continues to support the National Council for Disability through its events and hopes participation will help them to purchase a second wheelchair.
