A SERIOUS traffic accident in Grand Bahama claimed the lives of three people - two women and a man - in Freeport on Thursday evening.

Police were called around 9.15pm to the scene of a two-car collision at the intersection of Coral Road and Explorers Way, where two people - a man and woman - had died.

A third victim was rushed to the Rand Memorial Hospital for medical treatment, but later succumbed to her injuries around 2am on Friday. Fourteen people have now died this year in traffic accidents on the island.

Acting Assistant Superintendent Advardo Dames said investigations are continuing into the cause of the crash and police are appealing to anyone who may have seen what happened to come forward and assist them.

Police officers returned to the scene on Friday morning to conduct further investigations during the daylight. Although police have not confirmed whether speed was a factor in the crash, both vehicles were extensively damaged.

A video with graphic images of the accident scene was circulated on social media. Family members and relatives of the victims crowded the Accident and Emergency Section at the Rand Memorial Hospital after learning of the deaths.

The victims’ identities are being withheld by police until an official identification and an autopsy.

In observance of National Road Safety Month, the Grand Bahama Road Safety Committee will hold its annual Remembrance Church Service at Kingdom Apostolic Ministry for all victims who have lost their lives on the streets of the island this year. Family members of the victims have been invited to attend.
