First Baptist emerge as champions

FIRST Baptist emerged as the champions of the Baptist Sports Council’s 2015 Track and Field Classic at the Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium on Saturday.

First Baptist collected a total of 577.50 points to dethrone Macedonia Baptist, who had to settle for second place with 426. Charles W Saunders High School came in third with 210.

The rest of the field in order of finish were New Bethany with 162, Mt Ararat with 143, Golden Gates Native with 127.50 and St Paul’s Fox Hill with 95.

First Baptist also carted off five of the eight divisional most outstanding athletes awards.

First Baptist’s Audliyah Clarke took the 10-and-under girls’ division after he won the 50 metres and was second in the 200m. Edwinette Sturrup won the 20-and-under girls’ division with her victory in the 400m. Jayden Davis was the 10-and-under boys’ winner, taking the 50 and 200 metres. Albert Bain was the 15-and-under title winner with first in the 400m, second in the 200 and third in the 100m and Chavez Major captured the open men with his win in the 100m, third in the 800 and high and long jumps.

Jasonique Moss of Mt Ararat won the 15-and-under girls’ division with her victory in the 400m and second in the 100m, Denaire Pickstock of Macedonia won the open women as she finished first in both the 100 and 400m and second in the 200m and long jump. Michael Gomez, representing First Baptist, captured the 20-and-under men’s crown by taking both the 200 and 400m.

Deaconess Joanna Webb won the masters women’s 100m and 400m walk and Rev Dereck Munroe took the honours in both of the masters men’s events.

The meet was held in conjunction with the Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention’s Youth Department headed by Rev Deno Cartwright.

In a special challenged race for the youth leaders, Cartwright was beaten out at the tape in the men’s 100m by Deacon Adrian Finley of First Baptist.

The BSC expressed its gratitude to Delton ‘Doc’ Basin of Doc’s Pharmacy, Stephen Murray, Sandra Butler and Earl Clarke for their assistance in making the event a success.
