Disappointed in Maurice Moore

EDITOR, The Tribune:

Maurice Moore’s comments at an FNM meeting in Grand Bahama last weekend were sad, disappointing and deeply disturbing.

His belligerent words and tone against those within the FNM who have a different opinion than his, is a betrayal of the legacy of the FNM and of the spirit and beliefs of the Dissident Eight and other Freedom Fighters.

The FNM is founded on the principles of open debate, free speech, collegiality and tolerance for differing opinions. Today, Moore is sounding like the PLP, telling FNMs who don’t share his opinion to basically get to hell out of the party.

How tragically ironic it is that his words echo some infamous words spoken by Maximum Leader L. O. Pindling at the PLP’s convention in 1970. Has Moore taken leave of both his memory and his senses? Increasingly intolerant of any criticism of his leadership, Pindling arrogantly challenged his critics, including Moore, to “ … Cut bait or get to hell out of the boat!”

That is how the FNM was born: by standing up to a leader who basked in the glory of a personality cult and who abandoned the principle of collegiality which is at the heart of our democratic system of government.

It is truly sad that Moore is acting in the very manner of the PLP when they turned on him and other dissidents in the party. He now seems to want to label as traitors those who love the FNM just as much as he does and who have a legitimate disagreement on the direction of the party.

What a bitter disappointment that one of the Dissident Eight, who was branded a traitor for expressing his concerns about the direction of the PLP those many years ago, now suggests that perhaps those who today express the concerns of their conscience must be dealt with harshly by the party, and should perhaps be removed from the FNM.

Maurice Moore is not only destroying his legacy in the party. He also seems to be party to the demise of the values, the good name and the traditions of the FNM. Maurice Moore has become the very thing he once fought against.

Moore’s comments come soon after another FNM said that any opposition in the FNM should be crushed. The FNM as we once knew it is slipping away day by day. We will soon have two PLP-like parties in the country.

WAL writing. "The FNM was built on Free speech, tolerance for differing opinions" You after all that, you are afraid to sign your name, because you are afraid you do know you have written a lie.

The FNM is no more.....Hubert Ingaham saw to its death a long time ago.....giving money or time to FNM is just throwing it away.....may as well support the PLP.....at least its generally well known Minnis is capable of being much more corrupt and evil than Christie could ever be....not to mention that Minnis is an outright hater of XXXXX XXXXXX.
